In powerlifting, comparing the strength of a 150 lb lifter to a 250 lb lifter by absolute weight lifted isn’t fair. The heavier lifter will almost always lift more.

The Wilks Score is a mathematical formula designed to measure relative strength. It levels the playing field, allowing lifters of different body weights (and genders) to compare their strength pound-for-pound.

How is Wilks Calculated?

The Wilks coefficient is calculated using a complex 5th-order polynomial equation. You multiply your total weight lifted (in kg) by this coefficient.

Source: Developed by Robert Wilks, CEO of Powerlifting Australia. It was the standard formula used by the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) for decades.

Caution: While Wilks is the most famous metric, some federations have moved to newer formulas (like IPF GL or DOTS) to correct slight mathematical biases at extreme heavy/light body weights.
