1. Total Session Volume (Tonnage)

Total volume represents the total workload completed during a training session or for a specific muscle group.

Volume Calculation Formula: $$\text{Total Volume} = \text{Sets} \times \text{Reps} \times \text{Weight}$$

Real-World Example:

Imagine two back squat workouts logged one week apart:

  • Week 1: 200 lbs for 3 sets of 5 reps
    $$\text{Volume} = 3 \times 5 \times 200 = 3,000 \text{ lbs}$$

  • Week 2: 200 lbs for 3 sets of 6 reps
    $$\text{Volume} = 3 \times 6 \times 200 = 3,600 \text{ lbs}$$

Even though the barbell weight remained identical at 200 lbs, your total work capacity increased by 600 lbs (+20%). You successfully applied progressive overload without ever touching a heavier plate.


2. Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) & Reps in Reserve (RIR)
